Project 335i -
Oil Pan Swap |
Oil Pan Comparison
 |
Since
some engines don't have an oil pan suitable for the 335i conversion
installed, one from the e34 535i or e32 735i is to be used. In
the case of these oil pans the reservoir is shifted somewhat further
forward and is slightly flatter. These changes are key to the
335i conversion, as they allow for a lower and slightly more rearward
engine position to be used

e23 and e34 oil pans |
Oil Pump from the e34 M30
 |
The oil pump from the new
oil pan must also be used. The pickup of the original pump is
too far rearward to function properly with the new pan.
Fig.: e23 oil pump |
 |
The pickup is
the only part that distinguishes these two pumps. It would be possible
to simply change the pickup of the old pump over to that of the new
pump. During this stage the parts of the pump are to be
thoroughly cleaned and checked for wear. If the engine had sustained any significant internal damage often
the oil pump will show significant scoring and the rubber seals will be melted (as was the case in Tino's 335i). Fig.: e34 and e23 oil
pumps disassembled |
 |
To avoid any
future problems with the oil pump and engine a complete new pump was
used in this conversion.

Oil Pump Chain and Chain
Tensioner
 |
In these newer
engines a separate oil pump chain tensioner was installed . The
play and noise of the chain in the older engines was rather annoying.
In these cases it is recommended that a tensioner from the newer
engine be installed.

on an e34 block |
 |
In the case of Tino's conversion, the tools were not
accessible to complete the installation of the tensioner. In
such cases it is acceptable to not use this part. It is only a
recommended item, it is by no means necessary.
